Piercing the Veil to Attorney Well-Being: Tips & Techniques to Work-Life Balance (1-hour CLE with beautiful power point presentation and hand-out)
As attorneys, we face immense pressure to achieve perfection – from crafting impeccable arguments and briefs to maintaining a flawless professional image that embodies the ideal of a zealous advocate. However, this pursuit of perfection often acts as a veil, concealing the realities of attorney well-being that are waiting to be addressed. Nationwide surveys on attorney well-being consistently reveal a stark truth: lawyers are far from immune to personal and professional struggles and our well-being is directly related to our ethical obligations and success as lawyers. Behind this veil of perfection, many of us are silently suffering. It is incumbent upon us, as legal professionals, to acknowledge this crisis and take proactive steps to address it.
In this 1-hour CLE program we will explore the foundations of the attorney well-being movement, define it, and examine current statistics and case law. We will also discuss the implicated professional rules of conduct and dive into ABA and state bar association recommendations. This program also offers science-based mindfulness solutions and other tips and techniques to address each element of the ABA’s attorney well-being guidelines to help participants achieve greater work-life balance. At the close of our 50 minutes together, there will be time for questions and an optional 15-minute guided meditation to help participants embody the well-being techniques discussed in the program. Unlike the corporate veil, the veil of attorney well-being is just waiting to be pierced!
Cultivating Resiliency for Lawyers (Well-Being Practicum)
While we can’t eliminate stress from our lives, particularly as lawyers, we can enhance our capacity to prepare for, recover from, and adapt in the face of stress, adversity, trauma, and challenge. This is resiliency. In this practical and dynamic program, you will learn about the foundations of the attorney well-being movement and current recommendations and implicated rules of professional conduct, how to identify the signs of burn out, learn about the physiology of stress on the body, assess your current level of resilience, and practice science-based mindfulness techniques. Attend this program to build your resilience, restore your well-being, and improve your competence and professionalism as an attorney. This program is perfect for a conference or lawyers retreat; designed to be a well-being skills-development program rather than a CLE, but if a CLE component is desired, we can discuss options. Offered in 1 hour, 1.5, or 2-hour durations. Includes a program workbook.
Lawyer’s Reset: A Meditation Meet-Up (Monthly or Weekly Series)
A regular 45-minute practice series that combines gentle movement, breath awareness, and meditation techniques to cultivate mindfulness and reduce stress and tightness in the body. This class is designed to help lawyers unwind and recharge after a long day of lawyering. This class is intended to be a monthly series to help lawyers build a regular wellness practice. It can also be booked as a weekly series, for a more focused approach, based upon. The group practice allows for community building to break down the taboo of attending to personal well-being in law. Studies show that regular exercise and a meditation practice helps reduce alcohol consumption; this program is intended to be held during a weeknight for added benefit. The 45-minute duration is long enough to allow for the positive effects of the class to be felt, while also respecting time pressures and allowing attendees to dedicate only 1 hour from start to finish. Call me to discuss options for a longer series or a one-time class option.
Workday Yoga Masterclass
A yoga class designed to do at your desk or in a conference room setting. This program is designed for persons of all fitness levels and no experience with yoga is required. Participants will be guided through a series of sitting and standing mobility-style exercises and yoga poses utilizing a chair, wall, and/or desk or conference table for stability. The class will close with a guided meditation designed specifically for lawyers, themed to reduce stress, calm the body and smooth the mind. This is a fun and uplifting class, often filled with laughter when done in person. Participants will be amazed at how much stretching and toning they can do at their desks! Alternatively, if your space allows, I can lead a more traditional yoga class on yoga mats. Great for in-person law conferences or as a mid-day online wellness break.
